Every Spring, the Cook County YMCA hosts a community dance recital at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts in Grand Marais. For many, this is an annual tradition that involves entire families, regularly selling out every night of the multi-night performance schedule. The event brings together community members from all walks of life to celebrate the hard work of dancers spanning generations.
Behind The Scenes: Rock On YMCA Spring Dance Recital
It's a sure sign of spring when Art and Beth Kidd's houseboat, the HMS Pontoon, finds its mooring in the Grand Marais Harbor. Filmed in May 2024 and May 2025, this is the 16th year of this short-but-significant pilgrimage. Produced by Chuck Olsen

Featured in this short film is Lonnie Dupre's home sauna, YMCA Camp Menogyn's sauna on West Bearskin Lake, and Sisu + Löyly's community sauna experience on Lake Superior. The home sauna represents a number of home owners who construct such spaces for regular use through the spring, summer and fall.  Furthermore, YMCA Camp Menogyn's sauna was originally constructed in 1933 by Finnish carpenters who arrived to build the resort that would eventually become the camp. The sauna was the first building they constructed, serving as their living quarters while they worked on the cabins. Currently, it is enjoyed by campers, staff, and neighbors alike.  Finally, the community sauna offered by Sisu + Löyly is a relatively affordable opportunity for anyone to partake who otherwise would not have access.  Regardless of the location, testimony confirms the sauna tradition is still alive and well in Cook County.  WTIP produces short films such as this to serve as a mirror back to ourselves, reminding us of who we are and where we come from.  Support from our community for this type of visual story telling is essential for the future of community radio and the ongoing expansion into community.
